"The beauty of the World Cup is that it is a celebration of rugby," said Wallabies captain Stirling Mortlock.

"Reducing the number of teams would reduce the number of blowouts, but a number of teams have done really well to get here. It's a celebration of rugby and of the French lifestyle and the Rugby World Cup would lose something [if they cut the number of competing teams]."

"The future of the game is in Asia," he said. "Some have said that less teams are the answer. But that is wrong. Rugby is a great game and it is the responsibility of those in charge to take it around the world."
