Wheelchair basketball athlete Naoki Yasu

Wheelchair basketball athlete Naoki Yasu will in October become the first professional Japanese player in Europe when he starts a new career in the European league, which has the highest playing level in the world.

"I'm not sure whether my playing style will work [in Europe]. I'm a little nervous. But I want to give it my all, since playing there is a dream-come-true for me," he said.

Yasu, 29, will play with Trevizo in Italy. He did not elaborate on the content of his contract with the team, but said, "I'll easily make ends meet with my salary and will be able to concentrate on my playing."

Yasu played with the Wheel Kings--a semi-professional Australian team--from June to September. His trademark is his speed on the court.

Yasu has loved sports since childhood. But after suffering from a disease that destroyed bone tissue in his hip joint, he started using a wheelchair while a second-grader at middle school. He started playing wheelchair basketball after entering high school.

Yasu played with the Chiba Hawks in Chiba Prefecture until May. He also has taken part in the Japan Wheelchair Basketball tournament, at which he was named top scorer and one of the top five players in the nation, as well as playing in the Paralympics. Unsatisfied with these achievements, he decided to try his luck abroad before he gets too old. After personally e-mailing his resume to promote himself, he was offered contracts in Australia and Europe.

"My goal is to be a wheelchair-basketball groundbreaker, like Hideo Nomo in major league baseball," Yasu said.

However, his dream does not end there. In the future, he wants to establish his own team in Japan and have it compete on the world stage.
